Nichole, the designer behind Acanthus, is part of the New Designer Gallery I've curated for JA New York. I love her Celestial Bodies collection, but she has blown me away with the new designs she will be debuting at the show.
The new collection is inspired by the symbols and patterns found in Kilims and mud cloth. I fell in love with the combination of shapes and designs, but mostly with the symbology behind the figures. The weaver tells a story with the symbols she chooses, often of strength, protection, love and fertility. The textiles are both visually beautiful and spiritually charged by the maker.
The process of creating some of the more intricate pieces in this collection, with the tedious application of 24k gold shapes, was almost spiritual itself.
