Rebecca, the designer behind Adriatic Jewelry, is one of the ten I've curated for the New Designer Gallery at JA New York. I love this gal and her designs for many reasons - one being her strong aesthetic. She creates jewelry that can be stacked and worn daily, her vision has so much potential. She is a millennial, creating jewelry that other millennials want to be wearing. Also, she makes every piece and her face lights up when she talks about spending time at the bench. And, I must mention, she has an adorable miniature Australian Shepard. Get to know more about Rebecca below!
I always had an obsession with jewelry and decided to major in metalsmithing once I got to college in 2007. I had a massive rock collection as a kid (which I still have) and my grandmother always wore stacks of Italian gold rings and bracelets. I always knew I would do something art related those influnces ultimately lead me to jewelry. Many of those pieces inspired a lot of the jewelry I make now. In college, I started making and selling on the side at boutiques and outdoor markets. After graduation I worked as a jeweler, then jewelry designer for another company and then decided to go full time with my line. It was at my last job that I decided to make the move from silver and brass to a more focused collection of solid gold and higher quality gemstones.
I sketch constantly and sometimes alter a design as I start the fabrication process. Sometimes I go through a few variations until I get it just right ( and most times the one closest to the original sketch wins out). If I buy a special cut stone, I will create a design specifically for that stone. The cut of gemstones I buy definitely influences the design. I like to make sure the metalwork compliments the gemstone and doesn't overwhelm it.
I'm inspired by almost everything from architecture, sculpture, patterns and antique jewelry. For my newest collection, I used several pieces from my last collection as starting points and tried to tie them together with my newest ideas.
My favorite design of the moment is my Stella Ring which comes in several variations of stone types and sizes. Its become popular as an alternative bridal, but I wear my inverted onyx version as an everyday ring.
I love Lalique, anything from the Georgian period, and ancient Egyptian jewelry. I'm also a big fan of sculptures like Roxy Paine and Diana Al-Hadid. I love Top Notch Faceting's gemstones and I'm dying to set one eventually.
Currently listening to: My favorite band is always Led Zeppelin, my favorite album is 12x5 by the Rolling Stones and I've been listening to a lot of Otis Redding lately. I love anything classic Rock n'Roll, blues and soul. Music is a huge part of my day and keeps me motivated while I work.
