Nichole, the designer and maker behind Acanthus Jewelry, contacted me a month or so ago to tell me about her new Celestial Bodies Collection. Since then, I have fallen in love with her line and am excited to announce that she will be participating in my curated collections of designers at JA New York! The Celestial Bodies collection is so beautiful and interesting to me because it's a very organic take on the celestial trend, which I fine to be very unique.
The Beginning: "I started designing about 6 or 7 years ago. I studied drawing and painting as an undergraduate, and ultimately earned my M.A. in Art History. I was working for a Public Artist and part-time in a gallery in D.C., but I missed exploring my personal creativity and making things with my hands. The idea of jewelry sort of struck me, and I've been in love with it ever since. I've taught myself different techniques, evolving over the years into the aesthetic I have now."
The Process: "I'm definitely a sketcher. I will be struck by an image or an idea and go into a sketching frenzy, filling up my sketchbooks with ideas and variations. I work from raw metals, and I love the process of transforming them into the pieces I envisioned. Since my work is centered around mixed metals, I consider how the gold and silver will interact, and how to highlight the gemstones I use."
The Inspiration: "I often look to my art history background for inspiration. I studied illuminated manuscripts, and the hand-drawn and painted images in them are incredibly inspiring. Usually I'm drawn to the ones that are a bit more sketchy, rough and feel hand made. These images of comets and stars were very striking, so I began to explore ideas of heavenly bodies. Rainbow moonstone is one of my absolute favorite stones for the beautiful blue flash, and the way it romantically contrasts with my black and gold treatment, so it was definitely a key player."
"I'm excited about this collection because I'm using more precious metals and diamonds, and creating more fine jewelry pieces. It's a challenge that I've been wanting to take on for some time, and it seemed like the right collection to tackle it with."
"I love the Andromeda Ear Climber. I'm a stud girl, but these are like studs with the volume cranked up. I love the play between the opals and black diamonds, and the black and gold treatment creates a lot of contrast and highlights the raw, handmade feel that I love about the little asterisks."
Currently listening to: "I really love Glass Animals right now. Their vibe is perfect when I'm working in the studio."
