You know when you spot a designer on Instagram and immediately become obsessed? That is how I felt when Julie Cohn popped up in my explore page. Her designs are organic and edgy as well as so unique. Her brand is strong and her craftsmanship is simply stunning!
"I started making jewelry around 2009. I was a freelance designer at the time and was working with my late partner Merle Lindby-Young on a drapery hardware project. We were trying to find different ways to prototype organic designs to send to China for our client. I had never even thought of working in metal until that project."
"I have never been a sketcher. I design by making. I start with wax or clay and just meander. If my design involves precise stone setting then I design to the stone shape. That is mostly with rings."
"Art, textiles, ceramics, architecture, nature, fashion. I am an image junky. I am constantly pinning to Pinterest. Before Pinterest I acquired a large design reference library. I have worked in a number of different mediums as an artist and designer. I trained as a painter / printmaker and it lead me in diverse directions to make a living. I have made handmade books, boxes, portfolios, designed dinnerware, textiles, rugs, carpets, wall covering, public art etc. and now jewelry."
Julie can't pick a favorite design but she loves designing rings the most. Her recent collection of rings was inspired by her love of contemporary architecture.
She is very similar to me because she's not a good "hanger outer." She works all of the time - on the interiors of her house, cooking and entertaining. She lives to make her work and go to a great flea market.
Favorite Artists & Designers:
"So many different people for all different reasons. I’m in love with the Jackson Pollock drawings and prints in the “Blind Spot” exhibition in Dallas. I love Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Serra, Michael Borremans, Calder; architects Tadao Ando, Louis Kahn and many more mid century architects and designers.
There are numerous jewelry designers who’s work is alwaysin the back of my mind as the pinnacle of flawless execution and taste: Robert Lee Morris, Ted Muehling, Tina Chow, Gabriella Kiss, Elsa Perreti…."
Julie is currently listening to: Smooth Sailin’ by Leon Bridges.
